Ibaraki Kasen wanted to meet with the teacher at Myoren temple, but the gatekeeper Kasoudani Kyoko barred her way with a shout: “What is it, the gate through which the buddhas come into the world?”
Kasen grabbed her head and forced it between her legs, saying, “Look, look!”
Startled, Kyoko whimpered, “This dharma smells of sardine heads and holly leaves!”
Kasen said, “This yamabiko! She’s not fit to keep the gate. She ought to be looking after the garden.”
The yamabiko ran into the temple with tears in her eyes and reported this to Byakuren, who said, “Let me test her.”
Byakuren went to the gate and asked Kasen, “What is it, the gate through which the buddhas come into the world?”
Kasen grabbed Byakuren’s head and held it between her legs, saying, “Look, look!”
Calmly Byakuren said, “The buddhas of the three worlds come, giving light.”
Kasen said, “This priestess is one with the eye. She saw the eighty-four thousand gates all thrown open.”
